He reached a unique and coveted position as physician for the U.S. delegation at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and was the first pediatrician to be selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee for the summer Olympic Games. He has been chosen as one of America's Top Pediatricians and America's Best Doctors. Still a dedicated athlete, he is nationally competitive in US Masters swimming. He is also the Past-President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla with a B.S. in Life Science, and achieved NCAA All-American status in swimming. He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, and then spent a year as a Big Brother in a home for troubled teens. After a pediatric residency at Arkansas Children's Hospital, he completed his subspecialty training in Sports Medicine at UCLA. He currently practices sports medicine in San Diego.

His professional accomplishments on the national and international sports scene have included the position of team physician for the U.S. Olympic Committee, and for the U.S. National Teams for swimming, soccer, gymnastics, and basketball. SPORTS SUCCESS Rx! authored by Dr. Paul Stricker, M.D.

fixing kids

Dr. Paul Stricker advises parents and coaches on how to make sports healthy, safe and fun for kids—with a prescription to cure the disease of excess pressure and unrealistic expectations in youth sports.

Many parents dream of their children becoming the next LeBron James or Maria Sharapova. But, these young sports phenoms are just that, phenomenal and exceptional.

In Sports Success Rx! Your Child’s Prescription for the Best Experience: How to Maximize Potential and Minimize Pressure (American Academy of Pediatrics, October 2006) author Paul R. Stricker, MD, FAAP, stresses that parents and coaches must embrace the idea of “reality sports success.” Dr. Stricker, a pediatrician also board-certified in sports medicine, outlines for parents and coaches the physical, chemical, and mental milestones that determine sports skill development in youth. Many unrealistic expectations and pressures stem from a lack of knowledge about the sequential maturation of these skills. With a better understanding of that developmental highway, parents and coaches can all help kids have a more positive and reality success experience of personal improvement and accomplishment. Kids need to know that true success is not defined by a gold medal.

Sports Success Rx! offers a friendly and jargon-free discussion of how children develop and what physical skills are achievable and appropriate for each age group. Dr. Stricker makes it clear that whether or not little Johnny can catch a softball has far more to do with the maturation of his eye-sight than talent or motivation. While promoting the benefits of regular exercise, Dr. Stricker warns of the emotional and physical dangers young athletes face from unrealistic performance pressure and overuse injuries.

Sports Success Rx! includes helpful “Success Rx” summaries at the end of each chapter, prescribing for parents and coaches the steps to help children maximize their potential and redefine success. Dr. Stricker speaks directly to parents in “Between You and Me” sections and asks parents to think critically about their child’s sports participation and how they can ensure their youngster is having fun and staying safe.
